The Chapel

A family chapel was added to Abbotsford in 1855 by Scott’s granddaughter, Charlotte, who had converted to Catholicism with her husband, James Hope Scott, in 1851.

The chapel is beautifully simple and has renewed significance because Cardinal Newman, (who was a very close family friend), often came to Abbotsford to celebrate Mass. Cardinal Newman was beatified by the Pope when he visited the UK in 2010 and a selection of items he gifted to the family along with the story of James Hope Scott and Newman will form part of a permanent exhibition in the Chapel.
