Abbotsford Trust Makes Two New Appointments

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

The Abbotsford Trust has made two new appointments to the team which is leading a multi-million pound regeneration of the historic property.

Sandra McNeil has taken up the new post of Learning and Engagement Officer.  The part-time post will see Sandra working with schools and communities in the Scottish Borders and beyond to develop opportunities that highlight the importance of Scott’s work, his legacy and his Abbotsford home and the surrounding landscape.  She will also work with further and higher education institutions, and will develop informal learning opportunities with adults, families and young people visiting the attraction.

Sandra has previously worked for the University of Glasgow and also currently works part-time for The Royal Collection, Palace of Holyrood House as Family Learning Coordinator.

Samantha Hobrough has also joined The Abbotsford Trust as Fundraising Officer.  In this part-time position, Samantha will be responsible for raising the remaining funds required to secure Abbotsford’s future as a world-class visitor attraction.  Over £10 million has so far been raised to pay for major regeneration work and the creation of a new Visitor Centre, however the Trust estimates that a further £4 million will required. Samantha will work with individuals, trusts and foundations, both in the UK and abroad.

Samantha has extensive experience in the fundraising sector with roles including Head of Fundraising for Brighton Dome and Festival – a major concert hall and arts venue that hosts the UK’s second largest arts festival.  Her experience also includes work for English National Opera and the Tate Gallery.  Samantha also runs her own freelance fundraising consultancy raising money for small organisations in the North East of England.

Jason Dyer, Chief Executive, The Abbotsford Trust said;

“We’re delighted that Samantha and Sandra have joined us here at Abbotsford where they will fulfill two vital roles.  Samantha will help to raise the remaining funding required to secure Abbotsford’s future while Sandra will develop the important educational aspect of our development plans which we believe will demonstrate Abbotsford’s role as a guardian of Scott’s incredible legacy.  They both have extremely impressive credentials and we’re greatly looking forward to working with them to ensure the success of this vital project.”

Abbotsford has now closed to the public to allow an extensive programme of restoration and refurbishment.  The house will re-open in 2013. Work continues on a new Visitor Centre at Abbotsford which is scheduled to open in Spring 2012.
