The Library at Abbotsford, consisting of over 9000 volumes, many of
them extremely rare and priceless, remains as it was when Scott arranged
the books originally. An avid book collector from childhood, Scott’s
intense interest in a huge variety of subjects produced an eclectic
collection including books on history, travel, literature, folklore,
linguistics and law, written in eleven languages. The
internationally renowned book collection to be found in this room and
the Study, were acquired by Scott to provide him with a working
scholarly library. It is of crucial importance for the study of any and
every aspect of his life and work. All of his interests, preoccupations
and sources are demonstrated by the books on the shelves of his library. The
room also houses many fascinating artifacts and items of furniture. |
